 2023 Preview

Mary Montgomery completed the 2022 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-2 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 7A region one, the Vikings earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Mary Montgomery's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Central Phenix City by a score of 58-7.

The Vikings improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2016. The Vikings won as many games as in any season since 2002. It marked the first time since the 2002 season that the Vikings qualified for the playoffs. The Vikings have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023. The Vikings had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points. The Vikings hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Golson saw improvement as they won six games following a 0-10 record in 2021.

Since 2010, the Mary Montgomery football program has struggled with a record of 36-95.

Over the past 25 seasons, Mary Montgomery has not won much with a record of 84-168. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 7A and 331st in the AHSAA.

The Vikings are led by head coach Zach Golson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-5 record in his first season at Mary Montgomery. The Vikings saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach Golson arrived. Under his direction the Vikings have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Golson. Over the course of his career, Coach Golson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

The Vikings finished last season with six wins. That is the most since 2002. They also qualified for a playoff spot for the first time since that very same year. Look for bigger and better things from the Semmes area in 2023.

The Vikings enter the 2023 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak.

The Vikings are considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

QB Jared Hollis will be returning after completing 146 of 211 passes for 2,152 yards last season along with 21 touchdowns. He only threw two interceptions all season.

Receiver James Bolton will return after grabbing 62 passes good for 1,304 yards and 13 TDs as a junior last season.

The Vikings open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Williamson on Friday, August 25 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Last year the Williamson Lions finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 5A region one. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Charles Henderson by a score of 20-16.

Mary Montgomery and Williamson have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Vikings have a 3-5-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2022 with Williamson winning by a score of 21-20.

Mary Montgomery lost 7A All-State  offensive lineman Jeremiah Beverly to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

The Vikings return 7A All-State Senior receiver James Bolton. He was named to the first team last season. The Vikings also return Senior quarterback Jared Hollins. He was named to the honorable mention team.
